Birds Of Passage

Safety

Birds Of Passage shows places that other campers post. We don't visit, check or approve them, and conditions change. You are responsible for your own trip.

In an emergency

Call 911 (or your local emergency number). Birds Of Passage is not an emergency service: we can't send help, and we may not see messages or reports right away.

Many spots have no phone signal. Text 911 works in some areas when calls don't. A satellite messenger or a phone with satellite SOS is worth carrying for remote trips.

If you see a post or message suggesting someone is in danger or about to hurt themselves or others, call 911 first, then report it in the app.

Before you go

Tell someone where you're going and when you'll be back. Download your trip for offline use (three dots on a planned trip) before you lose signal.

Check the land manager's rules, fire restrictions, closures, weather and road conditions. A pin on the map isn't permission to camp there.

Some spots need a hike or a high-clearance vehicle from the nearest road. Bring enough water, food, warm layers, a light and a way to navigate without your phone.

Private, closed and protected places

Don't trespass, and don't post the exact location of private land, closed areas, or fragile places such as archaeological sites, nesting areas or rare plants. Use Hide location instead, or don't post it.

Leave no trace: pack out what you bring, use existing fire rings, and camp on durable ground away from water.

Meeting people from the app

Meet in public places first, tell a friend who you're meeting, and trust your instincts. You can block anyone from their profile, and block hides their posts, comments and chats.

Reporting

Report posts, comments, messages and people from the three dots, or long-press a chat message. We review reports within 24 hours and remove content and accounts that break our Terms.
